The ENHANCEMENT GAME is designed for assessment and training of vision at intermediate contrast levels. Information at intermediate contrast levels is used in visual communication and many activities of daily living so it is important to know the quality of visual function at those contrast levels. The game is called ENHANCEMENT GAME because it will "enhance" our understanding of the quality of vision among young children and multihandicapped persons. It also offers opportunities to enhance and train visual functions at low contrast levels in an amblyopic eye.

The ENHANCEMENT GAME is the first game that allows training of low contrast vision in a play situation. The ENHANCEMENT game has the same rules as the DOMINO CARDS game, another game in the Lea Test System (See Lea SYMBOLS DOMINO CARDS).

The sizes and contrasts on each card are chosen so they are almost equally difficult to see if the slope of the contrast sensitivity curve has its usual declination (Type I). If the slope is steeper than usual, the symbol at the lower contrast is easier to see than the symbol at the higher contrast (Type II). On the other hand, if the slope is less steep than usual (Type III), then the high contrast symbol is easier to see than the low contrast symbol. An observation like this is worth reporting to the child's eye doctor.

Types of decrease in contrast sensitivity. Type I, decrease is similar at high and low contrast, declination of the curve does not change. Type II, decrease is greater at high contrast than at low contrast; declination of the curve is steeper than normal. Type III, decrease is greater at low than at high contrast.

The ENHANCEMENT GAME consists of 64 domino-like cards with a large symbol at one end and a smaller symbol at the other end. The apple, box, ball and house symbols vary in contrast. The set is divided into four packs of 16 cards each. The packs consist of 12 symbol sizes between 16M and 1.25 M. The back of the cards has the following notations: Letter size in M Units, contrast of the symbols as percent contrast, 6 meter equivalent, 20 foot equivalent and decimal acuity value at a 40 cm (16 in) test distance.
